In English grammar， the
Simple Past (or Past Simple)
is the basic form of the past tense。 It is used principally to describe events in the past， although it also has some other uses。在英語語法中，一般過去時（或一般過去時）是過去時的基本形式。它主要用於描述過去的事件，儘管它也有其他一些用途。
Simple Past Tense with “TO BE” (was/were)一般過去時與TO BE (was/were)連用

Positive Sentence:肯定句：

Example：例子：
They were friends。他們是朋友。
Negative Sentence:否定句：
S + was not/were not + …主語+不是/不是+…
Example：例子：
They weren’t friends。他們不是朋友。
Question form:疑問句：
Was/Were + S + …?是/曾經是+主語+…？
Example：例子：
Were they friends？他們是朋友嗎？
Simple Past Tense with Regular Verbs一般過去時加動詞
Regular English verbs form the simple past in –ed； however there are a few hundred irregular verbs with different forms。一般英語動詞構成-ed中的一般過去時；然而，不規則動詞有幾百種不同的形式。
Positive Sentence:肯定句：
S + verb-ed + …主語 +動詞-ed+…
Example：例子：
She work yesterday。她昨天工作
Negative Sentence:否定句：
S + did not/didn’t + verb (in base form) + … S + did /didn 't +動詞(基本形式)+…
Example：例子：
She didn’t work yesterday。 她昨天沒工作。
Question form:疑問句：
Did + S + verb (in base form)? Did + S +動詞(基本形式)?
Example：例子：
Did she work yesterday？ 她昨天工作了嗎？
Simple Past tense with Irregular Verbs一般過去時和不規則動詞
There are a few hundred irregular verbs with different forms。有幾百種不同形式的不規則動詞。
Positive Sentence:肯定句：
S + irregular verb + …S +不規則動詞+…
Example：例子：
They went to Spain for their holidays。 他們去西班牙度假了。
Negative Sentence:否定句：
S + did not/didn’t + verb (in base form) + …S + did /didn 't +動詞(基本形式)+…
Example：例子：
They didn’t go to Spain for their holidays？他們沒有去西班牙度假嗎？
Question Form:疑問句：
Did + S + (verb in base form)? Did+ S +(動詞的基本形式)?

How to Use the Past Simple Tense如何使用一般過去時
The Simple Past is used:一般過去時是這樣使用的:
To express completed action in the past表示過去完成的動作
Example：例子：
I saw a ghost last Friday。上星期五我看見鬼了。
To describe a series of completed actions in the past描述過去完成的一系列動作
Example：例子：
I finished work， walked to the beach， and found a nice place to swim。我完成了工作，走到海邊，找到了一個游泳的好地方。
To express habits in the past表達過去的習慣
Example：例子：
When I was young， I watched lots of television every day after school。當我年輕的時候，我每天放學後看很多電視。
For stative verbs， which are verbs that do not express an action， but a state of mind or being E。g。 have （own）， be， think （believe）， know， dislike， need， owe， understand， wish例如：have （own）， be， think （believe）， know， hate， need， owe， understand， wish
Example：例子：
He had a small cottage in the woods。他在樹林裡有一間小農舍。
